Colposcope machine: what to expect

It stays outside the vaginal opening and gives an enlarged, well-lit view of the cervix, vagina and vulva. The clinician looks through eyepieces or at a connected screen. A colposcope helps identify areas that may need closer assessment, but the machine itself does not confirm a diagnosis.

During colposcopy, you lie on an examination couch and a speculum gently holds the vaginal walls apart. The clinician positions the colposcope nearby, focuses its lenses and directs its light toward the cervix. Liquids may be applied to the cervix to make cell changes easier to see. If an area looks unusual, a small tissue sample may be taken for laboratory examination.

The magnified view can guide sampling more precisely. Seeing an area through the machine does not by itself show whether it is harmless, precancerous or cancerous; that interpretation may depend on screening results and, when taken, the tissue sample.

Tell the clinic if you may be pregnant, take medicines that affect bleeding, have allergies, or are bleeding heavily on the appointment day. Follow the clinic's instructions about vaginal medicines, sex, tampons or menstrual products before the visit. Bring your cervical screening information if it was completed elsewhere.

You can ask the clinician to explain each part before it happens, pause if you are uncomfortable, or arrange a chaperone. After a biopsy, follow the instructions provided about discharge, spotting, bathing, exercise and vaginal products.

Contact the clinic promptly if bleeding is heavier than expected, pelvic pain is severe or worsening, discharge smells unpleasant, or you develop fever or feel acutely unwell. Seek urgent care for fainting, difficulty breathing, severe weakness or bleeding that is rapidly soaking menstrual protection. These warnings relate to the examination or biopsy, not to the colposcope's light or lenses.

Ask why colposcopy was recommended, whether a biopsy may be needed, how discomfort can be managed, when results should arrive, and who will explain them. You may also ask whether the view will be shown on a monitor and whether images are stored in your medical record.
