Cellulitis caused by a bug bite

A simple bite reaction often causes a small itchy area near the bite. Cellulitis tends to produce skin that becomes progressively warmer, redder, more swollen and painful over time. Scratching can create an opening for bacteria, and the original bite may be hard to identify. Pus, red streaks, swollen glands or fever suggest a problem beyond ordinary itch. The appearance alone cannot identify the exact germ or confirm the diagnosis.

Wash the area gently with soap and water, keep fingernails short, and use a clean covering if the skin is open. Avoid squeezing the bite or applying irritating household substances. Marking the edge of redness can help show whether it is spreading, but it should not delay assessment. Contact a clinician promptly if pain, warmth, swelling or redness is increasing.

Seek urgent care for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, pus, red lines, fever, facial or eye swelling, or trouble moving the affected area. Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, widespread hives, faintness or confusion, as these may indicate a severe allergic reaction or serious infection. Arrange earlier review if diabetes or immune suppression affects you.
