Can insect bites and stings cause cellulitis?

Scratching, rubbing, or squeezing a bite can create a small opening. Cellulitis is a deeper bacterial skin infection, so the area may become increasingly red, warm, swollen, and tender rather than settling like a simple itchy reaction. Redness can spread outward, and the skin may feel tight. A bite can also remain an uncomplicated local reaction, so itch alone does not establish cellulitis.

Wash the area gently with soap and water, pat it dry, and avoid scratching. A cool compress may ease itch and swelling. Do not apply harsh chemicals or share creams. Marking the edge of redness with a pen can help you notice whether it is expanding. If redness, warmth, pain, or swelling is worsening, arrange a prompt clinical assessment; cellulitis may need prescription treatment.

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, chills, pus, red streaks, marked swelling, or feeling unusually unwell. Get emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or widespread hives after a sting, because these can signal a severe allergic reaction. People with diabetes or reduced immune defenses should seek advice early when an irritated bite is worsening.

Ask whether the changes fit cellulitis, an allergic reaction, or another skin problem; whether prescription treatment is needed; how to care for the bite while it heals; and which changes should prompt an urgent review.
