What should you know about cloxacillin for cellulitis?

Cellulitis is an infection in deeper skin and soft tissue, often entering through a cut, bite, cracked skin, or foot problem such as Athlete's Foot. Cloxacillin targets some bacteria but is not the right medicine for every infection. A clinician considers the affected area, illness severity, previous antibiotic exposure, allergies, and other health conditions such as Type 2 Diabetes. Redness can look temporarily worse before it improves, so the treatment plan should include monitoring.

Take cloxacillin exactly as prescribed and do not use leftover capsules or someone else's medicine. Keep the affected limb raised when practical, drink normally, and mark the edge of redness only if your clinician suggests it so spread can be noticed. Keep wounds clean and attend any planned review. Tell the prescriber about a penicillin allergy, vomiting, severe diarrhoea, or difficulty taking the medicine.

Get urgent assessment if redness or swelling is spreading quickly, pain is severe, fever develops, the skin becomes blistered or dark, or you feel faint, confused, or very unwell. These symptoms can signal a deeper infection or Sepsis. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or widespread hives after a dose.
