How swelling can appear
Skin swelling is an increase in tissue size that can feel puffy, tight, warm, itchy or tender, depending on the underlying process.
It may affect a small spot, an entire limb, the eyelids or lips, or an area surrounding a rash. Swelling may develop quickly or gradually. Notice whether it is one-sided, whether the skin is red or hot, whether it leaves an indentation after gentle pressure, and whether there is pain, itch or a new medication or food exposure.
Urgent warning signs
Call emergency services now for swelling of the tongue, throat or lips with difficulty breathing, wheezing, a tight throat, dizziness or collapse. Seek urgent same-day assessment for swelling that is rapidly enlarging, very painful, red and hot, or paired with fever, red streaks, pus or feeling severely unwell. Do not wait to see whether airway symptoms pass.
Conditions that can present with swelling
Angioedema can cause deeper swelling, often around the eyes, lips, face, hands, feet or genitals; airway involvement is an emergency. Cellulitis is a skin infection that can make an area swollen, warm, red and tender. Hives can produce itchy raised welts, and swelling may occur with them or separately.
These conditions are listed alphabetically, not as a likelihood ranking. The speed of change, the site involved, temperature of the skin and accompanying symptoms are more informative than swelling alone.
How clinicians investigate swelling
A clinician asks when swelling began, how quickly it changed, what happened beforehand, and whether you have had previous episodes. Examination checks the skin, surrounding tissue, temperature, tenderness and circulation. Depending on the pattern, they may review medicines, assess for infection or allergy-related features, and arrange tests or treatment without delay when a serious cause is possible.
Treatment is matched to the cause
Airway symptoms require emergency treatment. Suspected skin infection needs prompt clinical assessment and may require prescription medicine. Hives or angioedema are managed according to their trigger, severity and whether deeper swelling is present. Avoid squeezing, massaging or applying strong topical products to a hot, painful swollen area, as this may worsen irritation or delay appropriate care.
Practical steps between episodes
If you have had a reaction, record foods, medicines, insect stings, new products and activities around the time symptoms began. Use prescribed medicines as directed and keep follow-up appointments for recurrent swelling. Protect cuts and insect bites from scratching, clean minor breaks in the skin, and seek advice before restarting something suspected of triggering a reaction.
Symptoms that need to be reported
Report shortness of breath, wheeze, throat tightness, faintness, fever, chills, a rapidly expanding red area, blisters, rash, itch, pain and recent injuries. One-sided leg swelling with chest pain or breathlessness also requires urgent assessment.
Why early assessment can matter
Swelling can limit movement and make the skin vulnerable to rubbing or breakdown. Infection may spread beyond the initial area, while a severe allergic-type reaction can involve the airway. Knowing the cause helps clinicians give advice on avoiding triggers, treating recurrence and recognising the signs that call for emergency help.
