What should you know about cat dander allergy test?

Cat allergy is usually triggered by proteins found in skin flakes, saliva, or urine, rather than by fur itself. A skin-prick test places small amounts of suspected allergens on the skin, while a blood test measures an immune response to selected allergens. A positive result shows sensitisation; it does not by itself prove that every symptom is caused by cats.

A clinician will consider timing, symptoms, other exposures, and conditions such as allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, or asthma. A negative result may make cat allergy less likely, but it does not replace a careful clinical assessment.

Tell the clinician about antihistamines and other medicines, because some can affect skin testing. Bring a clear history of what happens around cats, including sneezing, itchy eyes, wheezing, or blocked nose. After the result, discuss practical exposure reduction and symptom treatment rather than removing a pet based on a test result alone.

Seek emergency help for sudden breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, severe dizziness, or collapse after an exposure. These can be signs of anaphylaxis. For recurring wheeze or night-time breathing symptoms, arrange medical review even when symptoms settle away from cats.
