Cat asthma symptoms: signs to recognise

Asthma can irritate and narrow the airways. A dry cough may be worse at night, during exercise, or after exposure to dust, smoke, cold air, or fragrances. Wheezing is a whistling sound, while chest tightness can feel like pressure or difficulty getting a satisfying breath. Some people have one symptom rather than the full group.

Symptoms alone do not establish asthma. Chronic cough, infection, reflux, allergy, and other breathing conditions can look similar. Note the timing, activity, possible trigger, and response to prescribed medicine so a clinician can assess the pattern.

Keep a simple diary of cough, wheezing, tightness, sleep disruption, and breathlessness. Reduce smoke and strong scents, address visible damp or mould, and follow the treatment plan you have been given. Book an appointment if symptoms recur, affect exercise or sleep, or lead to repeated reliever use. Bring all inhalers to the visit for a technique check.

Seek emergency help if breathing is severely difficult, speech is limited, lips appear blue or grey, you become confused or faint, or symptoms progress quickly. Chest tightness with marked breathlessness should not be watched at home. Sit upright and follow prescribed emergency instructions while help is arranged.
