Cat asthma attack: what to do

During an attack, inflamed airways narrow more than usual. You may notice repeated coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, fast breathing, or difficulty speaking in full sentences. Symptoms can worsen after smoke, dust, a strong scent, infection, or another trigger. A sudden breathing change can also have causes other than asthma, so do not rely on a label if the episode is new.

Stop exertion and sit upright. Move away from smoke, sprays, and other obvious irritants. If a clinician has prescribed a reliever inhaler and written plan, follow that plan exactly; do not take someone else’s medicine or exceed the instructed amount. Keep a record of what was used and when. If symptoms are not settling promptly, contact urgent medical services.

After recovery, arrange a review to identify triggers, check inhaler technique, and update the action plan. A nebuliser may be used by a medical team in some urgent situations, but home treatment should follow professional advice.

Call emergency services immediately for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, exhaustion, or inability to speak normally. Do this even if a reliever has been used. Keep the person upright and supervised while help is coming, and take prescribed medicines with you if practical.

Ask how to distinguish your usual symptoms from an emergency, which medicine to use first, how long to wait before seeking help, and whether you need a written action plan. Ask what triggers should be reduced at home.
