What should you know about bronchial asthma?

Short answer
Bronchial asthma is a long-term airway condition that can cause variable breathing symptoms and needs an individual management plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
The tubes carrying air to the lungs can become sensitive and narrowed. Their lining may swell and extra mucus can make airflow harder. Symptoms often come and go, and may be brought on by exercise, viral infections, smoke, dust, pollen, cold air or strong smells. Common presentations include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Having a cough or wheeze does not by itself confirm asthma; a clinician may use your history and breathing tests to assess the pattern.
What to do
Arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms recur, disturb sleep, limit activity or keep returning after colds. Use prescribed inhalers exactly as taught, and ask a clinician or pharmacist to check your technique. Keep a written action plan that explains your regular medicines, what to do when symptoms increase and who to contact. Notice personal triggers without restricting food or activities unnecessarily. Treating related problems such as Allergic Rhinitis may also help some people.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help if breathing becomes very difficult, you cannot speak comfortably, your reliever is not helping as directed, or you become unusually drowsy, confused or exhausted. Sit upright, follow your prescribed asthma action plan and do not drive yourself if your breathing is severely impaired. A sudden episode may need assessment and, in some settings, Nebuliser Treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which symptoms suggest poor control, how often your inhaler should be reviewed, how to recognise an attack early, and whether allergies or work exposures could be contributing.

Questions people ask
Can asthma symptoms vary?
Yes. Symptoms can change with triggers, infections, activity and time of day, so a quiet period does not remove the need for a plan.
Is every cough asthma?
No. Cough has many possible causes. Recurrent symptoms and breathing assessment help distinguish asthma from other conditions.
