AST (SGOT) blood test explained

SGOT is an older name for AST, so the labels refer to the same test. It is commonly included in a group of blood tests and cannot diagnose a particular condition on its own.

A laboratory marks the value against its own reference range. Clinicians then consider ALT and other liver-related markers, along with symptoms and examination findings. Because AST also occurs in skeletal muscle and the heart, a raised value does not automatically locate the source in the liver.

Recent vigorous activity, muscle injury, alcohol, an infection, and some medicines or supplements may affect the result. The wider blood-test pattern helps decide whether a repeat sample, a muscle enzyme test or a liver-focused assessment makes sense.

Follow the specific preparation instructions on your appointment request because AST may be taken with tests that require fasting. Tell the healthcare professional about all medicines and supplements, but continue prescribed treatment unless its prescriber tells you otherwise.

After the sample, check whether the result needs routine review or earlier follow-up. Note any recent fever, abdominal symptoms, dark urine, muscle soreness, unusual exertion or alcohol intake. That timeline may clarify a temporary rise and guide the choice of additional tests.

Obtain urgent medical help for yellowing of the eyes or skin with confusion, severe drowsiness, repeated vomiting, significant abdominal pain, unusual bleeding or rapidly worsening illness. New chest pressure, severe breathlessness or collapse also needs emergency assessment rather than waiting for a blood-test appointment.

If there are no urgent symptoms, arrange a timely discussion when AST is outside the stated range or when other results are abnormal. The appropriate timing depends on the full report and your health history, not the AST label alone.

Ask how AST compares with ALT, whether the likely source is liver or muscle, and which recent activities or medicines could matter. Confirm whether you need repeat testing, extra blood work or any temporary change in exercise or alcohol use.
