GGT blood test and alcohol

GGT is an enzyme associated with the liver and bile ducts. Regular or heavier alcohol exposure may increase the level, but alcohol is only one possible influence. Liver or bile duct conditions, medicines and other factors can also produce a raised result.

The test is not a breath test and does not calculate recent intake, dependence or a person’s character. A clinician compares it with ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase and sometimes bilirubin, then considers symptoms and the timing of alcohol, medicines or illness. A result should be discussed confidentially and without fear of judgement.

Give an accurate account of alcohol use, including changes over time, because this helps the clinician interpret the pattern and plan support. Mention medicines, herbal products and supplements as well. Do not try to alter the result by stopping prescribed treatment.

Your clinician may recommend repeat testing, a broader liver panel or an ultrasound. If reducing alcohol is part of the plan and you drink heavily or experience shaking, sweating, anxiety or nausea when you stop, seek medical guidance before stopping suddenly; withdrawal can require supervised care.

Contact a clinician promptly for yellow eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, ongoing vomiting or new swelling of the abdomen. Go to urgent care for confusion, severe sleepiness, vomiting blood, black stools or a seizure. These warning signs should not be explained away as an isolated GGT result.

Ask whether the whole liver panel supports alcohol-related irritation or suggests another explanation. Clarify whether repeat testing or imaging is appropriate, what reduction plan is medically safe for you, and where to get confidential help if cutting down feels difficult.
