Understanding an AST blood test result of 13

AST, or aspartate aminotransferase, is an enzyme found in liver cells and also in muscle, heart and other tissues. The report should place 13 beside a unit and the laboratory's own reference interval. If 13 falls inside that interval and other tests are reassuring, it is generally not flagged as raised; a low or lower-range AST usually has little significance by itself.

Interpretation changes when the unit is missing, the sample was damaged, or other results are abnormal. ALT is more concentrated in the liver, while bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, albumin and clotting tests describe different aspects of liver or bile-duct health. Creatine kinase may help when muscle injury is suspected.

Find the unit, reference interval and any high or low marker printed beside AST. Review the collection date and compare it only with prior results reported in compatible units. Consider why the blood test was ordered and whether recent strenuous exercise, muscle injury, illness, alcohol use, prescription medicines or supplements could affect the broader pattern.

No treatment should be started for the number 13 alone. If the report is unflagged and you feel well, discuss it at the planned follow-up. If another result is marked abnormal, contact the ordering clinician for an interpretation of the panel rather than focusing on a single enzyme.

Arrange prompt care for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stool, persistent vomiting, worsening pain in the upper abdomen, unusual swelling, new confusion or marked drowsiness. These symptoms matter even when an AST value appears to be within the printed interval.

Urgent assessment is also appropriate for severe muscle pain or weakness with dark urine, particularly after heavy exertion, injury or a new medicine. Emergency services should be used for collapse, severe confusion or rapidly worsening illness.
