Allergic rhinitis medication: what to know

Antihistamines can ease sneezing, itching, and a runny nose. Corticosteroid nasal sprays are often useful when congestion or several nasal symptoms persist. Saline rinses can complement medicine by clearing allergens and mucus.

A tablet acts throughout the body, while a nasal spray places medicine directly inside the nose. Some antihistamines cause drowsiness, whereas less-sedating options may suit daytime use better. Decongestant nasal sprays can quickly open the nose but may worsen blockage if used longer than directed.

Technique matters with nasal treatment. Aim the nozzle slightly outward, away from the centre wall of the nose, and breathe in gently. A strong sniff can pull medicine into the throat instead of leaving it on the nasal lining.

Match treatment to the symptom pattern rather than combining products at random. Check active ingredients so you do not accidentally take the same medicine in a cold remedy and an allergy product. Follow the label, clean spray devices as instructed, and note whether symptoms improve with consistent use.

Before choosing a product, tell a pharmacist or clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, glaucoma, prostate or urinary problems, heart conditions, high blood pressure, and other medicines. Avoid driving if a product makes you sleepy.

Arrange a routine appointment if symptoms keep disturbing sleep, work, school, or exercise despite correct treatment, or if facial pain, reduced smell, repeated nosebleeds, or one-sided blockage develops. These features may need a different diagnosis or treatment plan.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, faintness, or a rapidly worsening reaction after taking medicine. New wheezing or chest tightness also needs prompt assessment.
