Can acid reflux cause a cough?

A cough after meals, on bending or when lying down may support this explanation, particularly with a sour taste, hoarseness or repeated throat clearing. The pattern cannot confirm the cause by itself.

Stomach contents moving into the food pipe can activate nerves involved in the cough reflex. Reflux reaching the upper throat may also irritate sensitive tissues directly. Coughing then increases pressure across the abdomen, which can encourage further reflux and sustain a cycle.

Reflux is one possible explanation for cough, not the only one. Viral illness, asthma, nasal drainage, smoking, airway irritation and certain blood-pressure medicines can produce a similar symptom. Acid reflux may present with cough, but a cough should not automatically be attributed to reflux.

Record when coughing occurs alongside meals, posture, throat symptoms and foods. Try smaller portions, avoid lying flat after eating and limit only triggers that show a consistent connection. Elevating the head end of the bed may help when coughing interrupts sleep.

Avoid smoke and vaping aerosols, which can aggravate both cough and reflux. Do not repeatedly take cough suppressants or reflux medicines without advice; a pharmacist or clinician can check for interactions, review medicines that may cause cough and recommend an appropriate trial of treatment.

Book an appointment for a cough that persists, keeps returning, disrupts sleep or daily activity, or comes with wheezing, fever, trouble swallowing, hoarseness, weight loss or repeated reflux symptoms. Assessment may include listening to the chest and reviewing nasal, lung and medicine-related causes.

Seek urgent care if you cough up blood, struggle to breathe, become blue or confused, faint, or develop severe chest pain or tightness. Sudden choking or suspected inhalation of food also requires prompt attention.
