AED 300m Sharjah hospital expansion adds 72 beds and 14 ICU rooms

University Hospital Sharjah will add 72 beds, 14 ICU rooms and 300 parking spaces under an AED 300 million expansion ordered by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi.

For hospital CEOs, COOs and finance teams in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, the order puts a funded public tertiary expansion into a market shaped by Sharjah Health Authority (SHA), MOHAP and patient movement into Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

What the project adds

The new building will sit beside University Hospital Sharjah and connect to the current hospital through a shared central lobby, according to Gulf News, which cited Abdulaziz Al Muhairi, Chairman of SHA. Work is due to begin immediately, with no completion date disclosed as of 17 June 2026.

The parking increase matters for more than access. For University Hospital Sharjah, more than 1,200 spaces, ambulance routing and a shared lobby can affect appointment flow, emergency access and pressure on outpatient clinics.

Regulatory and competitive context

Dubai Health Authority (DHA) regulates Dubai facilities, while the Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH) regulates Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. In the Northern Emirates, MOHAP is the federal reference point for hospital regulation and professional licensing, while SHA handles Sharjah health policy, insurance and University Hospital services.

MOHAP hospital regulation covers public, semi-government and private hospitals in the Northern Emirates, including general and specialty facilities. The 17 June 2026 expansion order therefore still has to fit MOHAP requirements for hospital design, patient safety, staffing and clinical governance.

For private hospitals in Sharjah, the competitive issue is case mix. A government-backed hospital with 14 new ICU rooms, a helipad and 22 assessment rooms can keep more high-acuity work inside the emirate, especially specialist referrals and insured patients who might otherwise cross into Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

What operators should watch

The first operating constraint is staffing. The project creates demand for intensivists, emergency physicians, nurses, biomedical engineers and allied health staff. The UAE had 30.91 doctors per 10,000 people in 2023, according to MOHAP open data, but ICU and emergency coverage are harder to recruit than general outpatient capacity.

CFOs should watch whether SHA changes referral patterns for Sharjah Government beneficiaries and insured residents. SHA lists health insurance enrolment and eligibility for University Hospital Sharjah services among its public services, so a larger hospital could shift utilisation before private providers see a price signal.

The next disclosure to monitor is the construction timetable. The market has a start signal, but still needs procurement milestones, licensing updates, equipment tenders and workforce plans. Those dates will show whether the AED 300 million expansion becomes a 2027 operating issue for competitors, suppliers and recruiters, or a longer capital project.
