Zoonotic Influenza: What to Know

Influenza viruses circulate in people and in some animals, including birds and pigs. Zoonotic influenza refers to infection in a person after an animal-related exposure rather than usual person-to-person seasonal spread. The clinical picture can include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, tiredness, chills, muscle aches, or feeling generally unwell. People with influenza may have respiratory symptoms, but symptoms alone cannot identify the virus involved.

A clinician needs the exposure history: contact with sick or dead animals, poultry or livestock settings, animal markets, travel, and contact with an unwell person. This information can guide testing, infection-control precautions, and public-health advice.

If you develop flu-like or respiratory symptoms after relevant animal exposure, contact a healthcare service promptly and say what contact occurred and when. Limit close contact with others while awaiting advice, cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands, and avoid sharing cups, utensils, or towels. Follow local instructions about testing, treatment, and returning to work or school.

Do not handle sick or dead animals without appropriate local guidance. If an animal exposure occurred but you feel well, contact the appropriate health service if public-health authorities have issued advice for that setting.

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, persistent chest pain, blue or grey lips, new confusion, inability to stay awake, severe weakness, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and inability to keep fluids down. Breathing symptoms that worsen after a flu-like illness need assessment because influenza can be complicated by lower respiratory infection, including pneumonia.

Ask whether your animal or travel exposure changes the tests you need, whether people in your household need specific precautions, and which symptoms should prompt reassessment. Be ready to describe the animals, setting, dates of exposure, symptom onset, and any medicines already taken.
