What should you know about Yaz combined pill?

Yaz combines an oestrogen called ethinylestradiol with a progestogen called drospirenone. These hormones mainly stop ovulation and also change cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg. The pill can produce lighter, more regular withdrawal bleeding and may ease period-related symptoms for some people. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.

Some people use a combined pill for painful periods, acne, or symptoms linked with hormone-sensitive conditions. A clinician needs to check your medical history, blood pressure, medicines, migraine pattern, and smoking status before prescribing it.

Take one tablet at the same time each day, following the pack instructions. If you miss tablets, vomit soon after taking one, or have severe diarrhoea, follow the product leaflet or ask a pharmacist because protection can be affected. Do not stop an antibiotic or other prescribed medicine without advice; check for interactions.

Do not start Yaz during pregnancy. Tell your clinician about migraine with aura, previous blood clots, liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or a close relative with an early blood clot. They can discuss another option if a combined pill is unsuitable.

Seek urgent care for sudden chest pain, trouble breathing, coughing blood, one-sided leg swelling or pain, sudden weakness, or a severe unusual headache with vision or speech changes. These symptoms can signal a blood clot or another emergency and should not be watched at home.

Arrange a review if bleeding remains troublesome, mood changes feel severe, or you develop persistent abdominal pain or yellowing of the skin. A missed period may have several explanations; take a pregnancy test and seek advice if pregnancy is possible.

Ask whether your migraine history, blood pressure, medicines, and personal or family clot history affect your choice. You can also ask what to do after a missed tablet, whether your bleeding pattern is expected, and which non-oestrogen options are available.
