Yasmin combined pill: what should you know?

The hormones prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus and change the womb lining. Besides contraception, combined pills can make bleeding more predictable and may ease painful periods for some people. A clinician may discuss hormonal contraception when symptoms occur with conditions such as endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome, but Yasmin does not suit everyone. A history of blood clots, certain migraines, smoking, high blood pressure, liver disease or hormone-sensitive illness can change the risk assessment. The brand and formulation should be checked against your local prescription.

Take each active tablet on schedule and follow the pack instructions for missed tablets, vomiting or diarrhoea. Tell your prescriber about every medicine, supplement and herbal product because some can reduce contraceptive protection. Ask whether you need backup contraception when starting or restarting. Keep a note of headaches, bleeding changes, mood changes or breast symptoms. Do not share tablets or use them to treat irregular periods without an individual review. If you want to stop, discuss another contraceptive first if avoiding pregnancy matters.

Seek emergency help for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, severe abdominal pain, sudden vision or speech changes, or a painful swollen leg. Arrange a review for persistent irregular periods, troublesome headaches, new migraine symptoms, very high blood pressure, jaundice or bleeding that does not settle. A pregnancy concern, severe mood change or repeated vomiting also warrants prompt advice. A clinician can decide whether symptoms relate to Yasmin or need another explanation.
