When a chest X-ray may be used for a cough

A cough can arise from conditions affecting the airways, lungs, nose or digestive system. Acute Bronchitis, asthma, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux and the common cold are examples of conditions that can involve cough. The appropriate assessment depends on the full history and examination.

An X-ray shows structures in the chest and may help a clinician look for changes in the lungs or around them. It does not identify every cause of cough, so the result is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and other tests where needed.

Tell the clinician how long the cough has been present, whether it is dry or brings up mucus, and whether you have fever, breathlessness, chest pain, wheeze, weight change or blood in phlegm. Mention smoking or vaping, workplace exposures, recent infection and medicines, including blood-pressure medicines that can cause cough in some people.

If an X-ray is requested, tell the radiology team if you are pregnant or could be pregnant. Ask what question the scan is intended to answer and how you will receive the result.

Seek urgent medical care for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, coughing up blood, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange prompt review for a cough that persists, repeatedly disrupts sleep, or is accompanied by unexplained weight loss or persistent fever.

Ask whether a chest X-ray is likely to alter treatment, what alternatives are being considered, what a normal result would mean, and when you should return if the cough does not improve.
