Why does milia cause whiteheads?

Whiteheads is a common presentation of Milia. The appearance can be confusing because both may look like small, pale bumps. Milia are keratin-filled cysts under the surface and often feel hard or pearl-like. A true whitehead, also called a closed comedone, forms when oil and dead cells block a hair follicle. Milia commonly occur around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead, while comedones may occur in oilier areas and alongside other acne lesions. A milium generally has no open pore to clear by squeezing.

Keep the area clean with a mild cleanser and avoid pressing, scratching, or using a needle. Review thick eye creams or new cosmetics if the bumps appeared after a product change, but do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. A dermatologist can tell milia from acne and remove persistent cysts using an appropriate sterile method. Strong exfoliants near the eyes can cause irritation and should be used only with professional guidance.

Arrange a check if the bumps are tender, red, itchy, rapidly increasing, or not improving, or if they sit on the eyelid margin. A diagnosis is especially useful when several different-looking lesions are present, because acne, irritation, and other conditions can mimic milia.
