Why does migraine cause dizziness?

Balance depends on coordinated messages from the inner ears, eyes, muscles, and brain. During a migraine episode, ordinary movement, visual motion, bright lights, or busy environments may feel overwhelming. The result can be rocking, swaying, lightheadedness, motion sensitivity, or difficulty walking steadily.

Dizziness is a common presentation of Migraine. However, dizziness can also arise from dehydration, medicines, blood pressure changes, ear disorders, and other conditions. The pattern matters: describe whether there is spinning, faintness, imbalance, nausea, headache, hearing symptoms, or sensitivity to light and sound.

Stop and sit or lie down as soon as you feel unsteady. Rise slowly, use support on stairs, and postpone driving, swimming alone, or operating machinery until you are stable. Take migraine medicines only as directed in your treatment plan, and seek a clinical review if dizziness is new, recurrent, or different from your usual episodes.

Keeping regular meals, fluids, sleep, and a record of symptoms may reveal patterns for you and your clinician. Include the setting, movement triggers, duration, and any treatment that helped or did not help.

Call for urgent medical help if dizziness comes with one-sided weakness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, new confusion, fainting, chest pain, severe trouble walking, persistent vomiting, or a sudden severe headache. Prompt review is also needed after a head injury or when dizziness begins with sudden hearing loss.
