What dizziness can feel like
Dizziness can feel like spinning, unsteadiness or faintness, and the right care depends on the underlying cause.
Some people feel that the room is moving; this is often described as vertigo. Others feel lightheaded when they stand, walk, exercise or have not eaten. It can also feel like poor balance, a floating sensation, or being close to blacking out. Notice whether head movement, getting out of bed, heat, meals, stress, palpitations, hearing changes or a headache occur at the same time.
When to get urgent help
Seek urgent medical help for sudden dizziness with weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, a new severe headache, fainting, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, a very irregular heartbeat, or inability to walk safely. Get prompt assessment after a head injury, or when repeated vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down. Do not drive, climb or operate machinery while you feel unsteady.
Possible causes
The causes below are listed alphabetically, not as a ranking. Inner-ear problems can disturb balance signals, while low fluid intake, heat, low blood pressure or low blood glucose can reduce blood flow or available energy. Migraine may cause dizziness with or without head pain. Anxiety can bring lightheadedness alongside rapid breathing or a racing heart. Anaemia and heart-rhythm problems may also need assessment.
How clinicians assess it
A clinician will ask about the sensation, its onset, triggers and associated symptoms. They may check pulse, blood pressure lying and standing, temperature, ears, eye movements, hearing, balance, strength and coordination. Depending on the history, assessment can include a heart tracing, blood tests or a hearing and balance review. Bring a list of medicines, supplements and recent illnesses; some medicines can contribute to dizziness.
Treatment is matched to the cause
Care may involve drinking fluids and cooling down for heat-related symptoms, adjusting a medicine only with a prescriber's guidance, treating low blood glucose, or managing an ear or migraine condition. Positional vertigo can be treated with guided repositioning movements. A heart rhythm concern, persistent low blood pressure or suspected anaemia needs targeted medical evaluation rather than self-treatment.
Reducing future episodes
Regular meals, sufficient fluids and gradual position changes can reduce some triggers. In hot conditions, plan breaks in shade or air conditioning and replace fluids. Rise from bed by sitting first, then stand when steady. Limit alcohol if it brings on symptoms, and use prescribed glasses or hearing aids as advised. If a medicine appears linked to episodes, arrange a review instead of stopping it suddenly.
Related symptoms to track
Record the time an episode starts, what you were doing, how long it lasts and what improves it. Include nausea, vomiting, hearing change, ringing in the ears, headache, vision changes, breathlessness, palpitations, fever, weakness and falls. This record can distinguish a balance sensation from faintness and gives a clinician clearer information.
What follow-up may involve
Brief dizziness that settles may only need monitoring and trigger changes. Recurrent, worsening or unexplained episodes deserve a clinical review, especially when they affect work, walking or driving. Follow-up may lead to balance rehabilitation, medicine review, hearing care, dietary advice or specialist assessment according to the findings.

Questions people ask
Is dizziness the same as vertigo?
No. Vertigo is a spinning or movement sensation, while dizziness can also mean faintness, imbalance or a floating feeling.
What should I do during an episode?
Stop what you are doing, sit or lie down somewhere safe, avoid driving, and seek urgent help if warning signs such as weakness, speech difficulty, chest pain or fainting occur.
