Why does asthma cause cough?

Asthma makes the lining of the airways more reactive. When an irritant or trigger reaches them, the airway muscles can contract, the lining can swell, and mucus can increase. These changes stimulate cough receptors and may cause a dry, tickly cough or coughing that brings up mucus.

Cough is a very common presentation of Asthma. It may be more noticeable at night, early in the morning, after exercise, or during a viral respiratory illness. A cough on its own has many possible causes, so it needs assessment in the context of other symptoms and your medical history.

Use your asthma medicines according to your written action plan rather than relying on cough remedies alone. Preventer treatment is intended to reduce airway inflammation over time, while reliever treatment is used as prescribed for worsening symptoms. A pharmacist or clinician can check inhaler technique and whether a spacer is appropriate.

Record when the cough occurs, likely triggers, night waking, and the effect of your medicines. This can help a clinician distinguish an asthma flare from infection, reflux, nasal symptoms, or another cause of cough.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, inability to speak comfortably, blue or grey lips, drowsiness, confusion, or symptoms that are not improving with your prescribed asthma rescue treatment. Arrange a prompt review if cough is worsening, keeps disrupting sleep, or is accompanied by chest pain, coughing up blood, or unexplained weight loss.

Ask whether your cough suggests uncontrolled asthma, which triggers to focus on, and whether your inhaler routine or technique should change. Tell them about any nasal congestion, heartburn, new medicines, fever, or coloured mucus, as these details may point to another contributor.
