Short answer

A period can stop suddenly because of pregnancy, stress, illness, hormonal contraception, weight or exercise changes, or disrupted ovulation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why one cycle can change

Ovulation can be delayed or absent when the body is under physical or emotional stress. Starting, stopping, or missing hormonal contraception may also alter the cycle. Pelvic conditions such as Adenomyosis, Endometriosis, Ovarian Endometrioma, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, or Uterine Fibroids can affect pain and bleeding patterns, although a single missed period does not identify one of them.

A sudden change accompanied by pelvic pain, fever, unusual discharge, or pain during sex needs a different level of attention. Painful Periods may also be part of the wider history even when this particular period did not arrive.

Steps you can take

Take a pregnancy test if there is any possibility of pregnancy and repeat it or seek advice if symptoms continue. Write down your usual cycle, recent stress or illness, changes in weight or training, medicines, and contraception. Arrange a review if missed periods recur or are accompanied by troublesome symptoms. A clinician may recommend examination or tests based on your history.

When to seek urgent help

Get urgent care for severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, fever with pelvic pain, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Prompt assessment is also needed for new severe pain, persistent vomiting, or feeling acutely unwell.

Questions for your appointment

Ask whether pregnancy testing, hormone checks, infection testing, or an ultrasound fits your symptoms. Discuss whether your contraception could explain the change and whether options such as the Combined Pill or Hormonal Coil are appropriate for your goals.

Questions people ask

Can one missed period be temporary?

Yes. A single missed period can follow stress, illness, travel, changing routines, or delayed ovulation, but recurring changes should be assessed.

Can contraception stop periods?

Some hormonal contraceptives can make bleeding lighter, irregular, or absent. A clinician can explain whether your method fits the pattern.
