Whooping dry cough

A dry cough produces little or no mucus. It can follow a Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis while irritated airways settle. Postnasal drip from Allergic Rhinitis, airway narrowing in Asthma, irritation from Acid Reflux, smoke and dry air can also trigger repeated coughing.

The details help narrow the cause: cough after meals or when lying down can fit reflux irritation; wheeze or chest tightness can occur with asthma; sneezing and nasal irritation can occur with allergies. These features are clues, not a diagnosis.

Drink fluids regularly, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and note what triggers a coughing spell. Record whether symptoms follow exercise, meals, lying flat, exposure to dust, or a recent viral illness. This history gives a clinician a clearer starting point than the word dry alone.

Arrange a non-urgent review if the cough continues, disrupts sleep or work, or keeps returning. A clinician may listen to the chest, review medicines and decide whether conditions such as Chronic Cough or Bronchiectasis need further assessment.

Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up blood, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, or trouble speaking because of breathlessness. A child with laboured breathing, poor feeding or unusual sleepiness also needs prompt medical attention. These warning signs matter even when the cough is dry.
