Whiteheads on the chin: what to know

The chin is exposed to saliva, lip products, shaving or hair removal, hands, and mask contact. These can irritate follicles or leave residue that combines with oil and dead skin. Small, similar, non-tender bumps may be comedonal acne. Deeper tender spots suggest more inflammation, while firm pale bumps can be milia. The pattern around menstrual changes or a new product is useful information for a clinician.

Wash gently after sweating and remove lip or face makeup before bed. Keep hair-removal tools clean, avoid picking, and choose non-comedogenic products near the mouth and chin. Change one product at a time so you can identify irritation. A dermatologist can discuss a topical retinoid for recurring closed pores, or an appropriate professional extraction when individual lesions are suitable.

Arrange an assessment for painful or deep chin lesions, pus, crusting, frequent recurrence, scarring, or a rash around the mouth that burns or flakes. Seek prompt care if swelling becomes hot and rapidly worse or comes with fever. A diagnosis matters because acne treatment may aggravate some forms of perioral irritation.

Ask whether the bumps are acne, milia, shaving-related irritation, or a mouth-area rash; whether any current product is a trigger; and which treatment is safe close to the lips.
