Whiteheads around the nose crease: what to know

A whitehead is a small, flesh-coloured or pale bump whose pore opening is covered. The folds beside the nose can trap sweat, sunscreen, makeup, and cleanser residue, while rubbing from tissues or masks may add irritation. Several similar bumps can fit comedonal acne; a firm, pearly bump may instead resemble milia. A photo or examination helps separate these appearances.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat the crease dry. Choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and remove makeup fully without scrubbing. Do not squeeze the area, because pressure can worsen inflammation and leave a mark. A clinician may discuss a topical retinoid for recurring blocked pores, introduced gradually because the crease can become irritated. Professional extraction may be an option when a trained clinician confirms the bumps are suitable for it.

Arrange a dermatology review if bumps become painful, red, crusted, repeatedly bleed, drain, or spread toward the nostril. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, warmth, severe tenderness, fever, or eye-area swelling.
