What should you know about whiteheads around nose?

Whiteheads form when oil and dead skin cells block a pore without opening to the air. The nose has many oil-producing glands, and sweat, sunscreen, makeup, touching, or friction can make congestion more noticeable. Whiteheads may be small, smooth, and pale rather than inflamed.

Firm, seed-like bumps that remain unchanged may be milia. Numerous flesh-coloured bumps across the nose and nearby face may fit comedonal acne, but a clinician should assess persistent or unusual changes. These possibilities cannot be separated reliably from a photograph alone.

Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, remove products thoroughly, and choose non-comedogenic sunscreen and makeup. Avoid squeezing, metal tools, abrasive scrubs, and repeated pore strips; they can injure the skin and make redness or broken vessels more visible.

For persistent congestion, a clinician may recommend a topical retinoid or a supervised acne extraction facial. Use only as directed and keep treatment away from the nostril openings. Improvement is gradual, and irritation should be reported rather than pushed through.

Book an assessment if bumps are painful, spreading, repeatedly inflamed, leaving marks, or unchanged despite gentle care. Seek prompt advice for increasing redness, warmth, pus, crusting, fever, or swelling around the nose and eyes. These features can signal infection or a diagnosis other than simple whiteheads.

Ask whether the bumps are whiteheads, milia, or another condition; which cleanser and sunscreen suit your skin; and whether a topical retinoid is appropriate. Tell the clinician about nasal picking, shaving, recent product changes, allergies, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
