Which specialist treats sinusitis?

Sinusitis involves inflammation in the lining of the sinuses, often after a cold or alongside allergy symptoms. A GP can review a blocked nose, facial pressure, mucus, cough and your general health, then decide whether home measures, medicine or further assessment is appropriate. An ENT specialist has focused expertise in the nose, sinuses and nearby ear structures. Referral can be useful when symptoms keep returning, do not settle as expected, or there may be a structural problem such as nasal blockage.

Arrange a GP appointment if your symptoms are troubling or persistent. Note when they started, whether they followed a cold, which side is affected, and any nasal sprays, pain relief or allergy medicines you have used. The clinician may examine your nose, throat and ears and discuss whether specialist input is needed. Avoid using decongestant nasal sprays for longer than the label advises, as prolonged use can worsen congestion.

Seek urgent medical assessment for swelling or redness around an eye, changes in vision, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. These features need prompt evaluation because infection or inflammation near the eyes and brain requires careful assessment. A nosebleed that is heavy or does not stop with firm pressure also needs urgent care.
