Wheezing While Exhaling

Exhaling can make narrowed airways more noticeable because the tubes become smaller as pressure changes in the chest. Asthma, COPD, acute bronchitis, and an allergic reaction can all be associated with wheezing. Allergic rhinitis may add congestion but does not explain every wheeze. In a child, bronchiolitis can cause noisy breathing. The pattern, duration, age, medical history, and other symptoms help a clinician decide what is happening.

Sit upright and breathe gently; avoid smoke and other airborne irritants. Follow your own written asthma or breathing plan if you have one. Do not delay assessment by trying an unprescribed inhaler. Record whether the noise occurs at rest, with activity, or after a meal, medicine, or possible allergen. If a clinician recommends it, nebuliser treatment can deliver inhaled medicine during an acute episode.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, inability to speak in full phrases, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or sudden throat or facial swelling. Seek same-day medical advice if the wheeze is new, persists, follows a suspected allergy, comes with chest pain or fever, or does not improve with your prescribed treatment.

Ask whether the sound is wheezing, what triggers it, whether you need lung-function testing, and what action plan to follow if it returns.
