What should you know about water hydrotherapy?

Short answer
Water hydrotherapy uses guided exercise in a pool to improve movement, strength, balance, and confidence while water reduces impact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens in hydrotherapy
A physiotherapist selects exercises according to your symptoms, mobility, strength, and goals. Buoyancy supports your body, warmth may reduce the feeling of stiffness, and water resistance creates a controllable strengthening challenge. Sessions can include walking, balance practice, joint movements, supported stretches, or task-specific exercises. Hydrotherapy may be used for joint pain and joint stiffness, and may form part of rehabilitation for ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, or frozen shoulder. It is an active treatment, so your feedback helps the clinician adjust the session.
Preparing for a session
Tell the therapist about falls, skin problems, wounds, infections, breathing difficulties, heart symptoms, and any fear of water. Learn how to enter and leave the hydrotherapy pool safely before starting. Begin with movements that feel controlled rather than strenuous, keep a stable support when instructed, and pause if you feel dizzy, breathless, nauseated, or unusually weak. Follow the facility’s hygiene guidance and allow time to cool down after leaving the water.
When to stop or seek advice
Do not enter the pool with an open wound or active infection unless a clinician has specifically cleared it. Stop and seek help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness, confusion, or a new loss of balance. A hot, red, markedly swollen joint, severe pain after a fall, or symptoms that continue to deteriorate needs medical review rather than a harder session.
Questions for your clinician
What is hydrotherapy intended to improve in my case? Is a warm pool appropriate for my health conditions? Which exercises should I practise independently? How will we progress from pool work to everyday or land-based exercise?

Questions people ask
Is hydrotherapy only for people who cannot exercise on land?
No. Water can offer a different training environment for mobility, strength, balance, or confidence, including for people who also exercise on land.
Can I do hydrotherapy without an assessment?
A professional assessment is useful when pain, weakness, balance problems, or a medical condition affects how you should exercise.
