Vomiting and cold chills: what to know

Short answer
Vomiting with cold chills can accompany stomach infection, food-related illness, fluid loss, migraine, or pain, even when you have no recorded fever.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Chills mean
- Feeling cold or shivery, with or without fever
- First priority
- Replace fluids in small, frequent sips
- Seek urgent care
- For confusion, fainting, severe pain, or bloody vomit
Possible explanations
Cold chills may mean you feel shivery or unusually cold; they do not always indicate fever. Vomiting itself can reduce body fluids and make you feel cold, weak, or dizzy. Gastroenteritis, Food Poisoning, and Rotavirus Infection can cause vomiting with diarrhoea, cramps, or poor appetite. Migraine may bring nausea with headache, light sensitivity, or sound sensitivity.
Abdominal pain deserves attention. Gallstones may cause strong pain in the upper right abdomen, while Pancreatitis may cause severe upper abdominal pain that can spread to the back. A stiff neck, confusion, severe headache, or a new rash alongside vomiting needs urgent assessment because Meningitis is a serious possibility, although symptoms have several possible causes.
Steps that can help
Sit or lie down if you feel faint, keep warm without overheating, and sip water or an oral rehydration drink little and often. Avoid taking large drinks quickly because they may trigger another episode. When nausea eases, choose small portions of plain food and return gradually to normal meals.
Measure your temperature when you feel chilled and write down the timing of vomiting, bowel symptoms, pain, urine output, and recent foods or medicines. Wash your hands after vomiting and using the toilet. The Vomiting page offers broader advice about this symptom.
Warning signs
Arrange urgent care for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a stiff neck, breathing difficulty, blood in vomit, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt medical advice is also needed when urination becomes much less frequent, dizziness persists on standing, or symptoms continue to worsen.
What to ask
Ask whether your symptoms fit a stomach illness, how much fluid replacement is appropriate, and whether a medicine or medical condition could be contributing. Share your temperature readings, pain location, bowel changes, recent contacts with illness, and any pregnancy possibility.
