What should you know about vasomotor rhinitis cough?

Vasomotor rhinitis is a type of non-allergic rhinitis. The lining of the nose becomes sensitive to changes such as cold air, strong smells, smoke, dust, pollution, spicy food, or changes in weather. This can cause congestion, a runny nose, sneezing, and mucus at the back of the throat. Vasomotor rhinitis can present with a dry or tickly cough when that mucus or nasal irritation reaches the throat.

Unlike allergic rhinitis, this pattern does not require exposure to a specific allergen and may not include itchy eyes or an itchy nose. A cough can also have other causes, including acid reflux, asthma, a common cold, or acute bronchitis. The character of the cough, its timing, and any breathing symptoms help a clinician sort these possibilities.

Notice and limit personal triggers where practical. Avoid smoke and strong fragrances, cover your nose and mouth in cold air, and keep indoor air comfortably humid without creating dampness. Drinking fluids can soothe a dry throat. Saline nasal rinses or sprays may help clear irritants and mucus; use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water for a rinse.

A pharmacist or clinician may recommend a nasal treatment suited to your symptoms. Use nasal sprays exactly as directed, because some decongestant sprays can worsen congestion when used for too long. Arrange an assessment if the cough persists, disrupts sleep, follows a new medicine, or is not clearly connected with nasal symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing up blood, or chest pain that is severe or does not settle. Contact a clinician promptly for fever with worsening cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, repeated night-time symptoms, or a cough that continues beyond a few weeks.

A clinician may examine your nose, throat, and chest and ask about triggers, reflux symptoms, medicines, smoking, and the cough's timing. Further testing depends on what this assessment shows.
