What should you know about variant asthma?

Asthma involves sensitive, inflamed airways that can narrow and make breathing harder. Some people mainly develop a persistent or recurring cough, while others notice wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. Symptoms may vary with exercise, cold air, viral infections, smoke, dust, pollen, or allergens such as house dust mites.

A cough alone has many possible causes, including allergic rhinitis, reflux, infection, and medicines. A clinician may ask about timing, nighttime symptoms, triggers, personal allergies, and response to treatment. Do not assume every cough is asthma, and do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Book an assessment for a cough or breathing symptom that keeps returning, wakes you, limits activity, or follows a recognisable trigger. Keep a simple record of symptoms, exposures, exercise, sleep disruption, and any reliever use. Reduce smoke and known irritants, manage relevant nasal allergy as advised, and use inhalers with the technique shown by your clinician.

Follow your written asthma plan if you have one. A nebuliser treatment may be used in a healthcare setting when symptoms are severe or inhaled medicine cannot be delivered effectively, but it is not a substitute for an individual action plan.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, difficulty speaking in full sentences, marked drowsiness, collapse, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening or not improving with your prescribed reliever plan. Sit upright, use your reliever exactly as instructed, and do not delay care while searching for a trigger. Children and adults with asthma can deteriorate quickly.
