What may be happening

Skin sensitivity can cause redness, itching, burning or a rash after sunlight. Eye sensitivity may cause discomfort, watering or a need to avoid bright light. Medicines, skin conditions, eye inflammation and migraine can all be relevant, so timing and associated symptoms matter.

UV exposure can continue through reflected light. A new or severe reaction should not be diagnosed from appearance alone.

Reducing exposure

Move into shade or indoors, cover exposed skin and use sunscreen as directed on its label. Wear UV-reducing sunglasses if bright light aggravates your eyes. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice; ask whether it could contribute.

When to get help

Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, reduced vision, marked swelling, blistering, breathing difficulty, facial swelling, a severe headache with stiff neck or confusion. Arrange review for a persistent, spreading or recurrent rash.
