What should you know about upright MRI scan?

Unlike a conventional MRI that commonly images you lying down, an upright system can capture selected body areas in a more weight-bearing or functional position. The scanner uses a strong magnet and radio waves, not ionising radiation. The appointment may include several image sequences, and the machine can be noisy. The position used depends on the body part and the question being investigated. An MRI does not by itself prove or exclude every condition; the images are interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination, and other tests. In some cancer pathways, MRI helps assess anatomy or extent, while a biopsy may be needed to identify cells.

Tell the imaging team about metal fragments, implants, a pacemaker, hearing devices, clips, pregnancy, kidney problems, and previous contrast reactions. Remove jewellery, cards, watches, and other metal items as instructed. Wear clothing without metal fasteners when possible. Follow the centre’s advice about eating, drinking, and medicines; many scans need no special preparation. You must keep still during image capture, although staff can communicate with you. If enclosed spaces cause distress, mention this before the appointment so suitable support can be discussed. Bring prior images or reports if requested.

An MRI itself is not usually an emergency procedure. After a scan involving contrast, seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, widespread rash, severe dizziness, or collapse. Contact the imaging centre about persistent vomiting, worsening pain, or a new problem after the appointment. If the scan was arranged because of new weakness, loss of balance, confusion, or a severe sudden headache, seek urgent medical assessment rather than waiting for the report.
