Upright chest X-ray: what to expect

Standing allows the radiographer to capture a standard view while you hold your breath briefly. The image can help assess infection, fluid, lung collapse, heart size and some longer-term changes. It cannot explain every cough or chest symptom, and a normal image does not rule out every condition. Findings are interpreted alongside your history, examination and any earlier images.

Wear clothing that is easy to change and remove necklaces or other metal items from the chest area. Tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, even when the examination has been requested urgently. You will usually stand against the detector, breathe in, hold still briefly, then repeat for another view if needed. The procedure itself should not hurt.

Ask the requesting clinician how and when you will receive the result; the radiographer cannot always explain it immediately. Arrange review for a cough that persists, fever, breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood or unexplained weight loss. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, sudden chest pain, confusion or collapse. Depending on the findings, follow-up may involve a GP Consultation, another scan or testing for Pneumonia, Tuberculosis or Bronchiectasis.
