Test allergen lists: what allergy testing covers

The list may include foods, pollens, moulds, house dust mites, animal allergens, medicines, or other substances suggested by your exposure pattern. Nasal symptoms may point toward allergic rhinitis; itchy watery eyes can occur with allergic conjunctivitis; cough or wheeze may be relevant to asthma. A positive test shows sensitisation, but it does not by itself prove that exposure causes symptoms. A negative result also needs to be interpreted with the history. Testing is different from a broad commercial panel that reports many findings without a clear clinical question.

Write down what happened, how soon symptoms began, the amount or setting of exposure, and whether symptoms repeated. Tell the clinician about medicines, skin conditions, asthma, pregnancy, and previous severe reactions. Ask which medicines need adjustment before testing; do not change treatment without advice. Follow the result with a practical avoidance or treatment plan. Food should not be removed from your diet solely because of a test result without professional guidance.

Call emergency services for throat or tongue swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or collapse after an exposure. Do not wait for allergy testing during a severe reaction. Arrange routine review for recurring nasal, eye, chest, skin, or digestive symptoms so the suspected trigger and the appropriate test can be considered.
