What should you know about triple neck fusion?

Cervical fusion stabilises selected neck vertebrae so bone can grow across the treated levels. In an anterior cervical procedure, the surgeon may remove a disc or bone causing compression and place a spacer, such as a PEEK spinal cage. A plate and screws may hold the construct while healing occurs.

Three-level surgery is considered in selected cases involving neck pain, arm symptoms, spinal cord compression, or instability. Cervical radiculopathy and cervical spondylosis may be part of the clinical picture, but the decision depends on examination and imaging rather than a label alone.

Tell the team about medicines, swallowing problems, smoking or nicotine use, and previous neck operations. At home, keep essentials at waist height and arrange help with transport and heavier tasks. Follow instructions about the collar, wound care, walking, driving, and exercises. Temporary throat discomfort or a changed voice can occur after an anterior approach; report symptoms that are severe or worsening.

Healing takes time, and follow-up imaging may be used to assess progress. Do not change activity limits because pain has improved; the fusion still needs protection.

Call your surgical team for increasing neck swelling, wound drainage, fever, worsening arm or leg weakness, or difficulty swallowing that is getting worse. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, sudden loss of coordination, or rapidly progressing weakness.
