What should you know about total allergy test?

Testing looks for sensitivity to selected allergens such as foods, pollens, house dust mites, moulds or animal dander. A positive result shows sensitisation, but it does not by itself prove that an exposure causes your symptoms. A negative result also cannot rule out every type of allergy.

The clinician compares the result with timing, severity and pattern. For example, nasal symptoms may fit allergic rhinitis, itchy eyes may fit allergic conjunctivitis, and wheeze may need assessment for asthma. Testing should not be used to test every possible substance without a clear clinical reason.

Tell the clinician about medicines, skin conditions, pregnancy, previous severe reactions and any food or exposure diary. Some medicines can affect skin testing, so do not stop treatment unless the clinician gives instructions.

After the test, record which exposures bring symptoms and follow the agreed avoidance or treatment plan. A specialist may recommend a supervised challenge or another assessment; never deliberately re-expose yourself to a suspected trigger at home.

Call emergency services for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, widespread hives with vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms after an exposure. These can be signs of anaphylaxis and require immediate treatment.

Ask which allergens are being tested, whether your medicines need adjustment, how a positive result fits your symptoms, and what action plan applies if you have a future reaction.
