Tomatoes and acid reflux: what should you know?

Short answer
Tomatoes may trigger acid reflux symptoms in some people, but they are not a trigger for everyone.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible trigger
- Tomato-based foods
- Helpful record
- Food and symptom diary
- Emergency warning
- Severe chest symptoms with breathlessness
Why tomatoes may bother you
Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upward into the oesophagus. Tomato-based foods may feel irritating because they are acidic, and sauces often include fat, spice or large portions that can add to symptoms. Heartburn, a sour taste, Cough or discomfort after eating can fit reflux, but symptoms overlap with other conditions. A Hiatus Hernia or Obesity can also be relevant contributors for some people.
Ways to test your trigger
Keep a simple food and symptom diary rather than removing many foods at once. If tomatoes repeatedly precede burning or regurgitation, try a smaller portion and avoid lying down soon after eating. A clinician can discuss meal timing, medicines and a plan suited to your symptoms. Persistent symptoms may need review for Acid Reflux or another cause.
When to seek care
Get urgent help for severe Chest Tightness, breathlessness, fainting, sweating or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Arrange medical review for trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss or symptoms that keep returning. Abdominal Pain that is severe or persistent should not be assumed to be reflux.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern fits reflux, which warning signs matter, whether medication is appropriate, and how to distinguish reflux-related Cough from another cause.

Questions people ask
Do I have to avoid all tomatoes?
Not necessarily. Triggers vary, so a diary and a structured discussion with a clinician can help identify whether portion, preparation or timing matters.
Can tomato reflux cause a cough?
Reflux can be associated with Cough in some people, but a persistent cough has other possible causes and deserves assessment.
