TNT chemotherapy: what the term can mean

TNT chemotherapy usually refers to treatment planned before the main treatment, but its meaning depends on the cancer. Confirm the expansion of the abbreviation, the treatment goal and how it fits your individual diagnosis.

In oncology, TNT may describe a planned sequence in which systemic treatment is given before surgery or another local treatment. The sequence can be intended to shrink or control cancer, treat cells elsewhere in the body, or show how the tumour responds before the next step. The exact medicines, timing and order vary by cancer type, stage, pathology and health factors.

Chemotherapy can affect rapidly dividing healthy cells as well as cancer cells. Possible effects include tiredness, nausea, appetite change, mouth soreness, bowel changes, hair loss, altered blood counts and infection risk; your regimen determines which effects are relevant. Ask whether the term means a formal treatment approach or simply a local abbreviation.

Ask for the full name of the regimen, its purpose, how it is given and what happens after the planned course. Review medicines, allergies, dental issues, fertility concerns and other conditions before starting. Learn how to check your temperature if advised, how to manage nausea, and whom to call outside clinic hours. Keep a written record of doses, symptoms and appointments. The same principle may be discussed across cancers such as breast cancer, bladder cancer or acute myeloid leukaemia, but plans are not interchangeable.

Call your oncology service urgently for a fever, chills, new shortness of breath, uncontrolled vomiting or diarrhoea, inability to drink, unusual bleeding, or a painful red area around a line or wound. Seek emergency help for severe breathing trouble, collapse, confusion or heavy bleeding. Do not wait for the next appointment if your team has given a different urgent-contact rule.
