What should you know about TMJ and light sensitivity?

Short answer
Light sensitivity with TMJ symptoms may reflect muscle tension or a related headache, but new or severe symptoms need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it may mean
The temporomandibular joints connect the jaw to the skull. Irritation, clenching, or overworked chewing muscles can cause jaw tenderness, clicking, facial pain, and a temple headache. Light sensitivity is more often associated with a headache disorder than with the jaw joint itself; migraine can include sensitivity to light, while conjunctivitis may cause light discomfort with eye redness or discharge. Meningitis is an uncommon but urgent cause when light sensitivity occurs with fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, or marked drowsiness.
What you can do now
Rest your jaw by choosing softer foods temporarily, taking small bites, and avoiding gum, wide yawning, and prolonged clenching. A cool or warm compress over the sore jaw area may help; use whichever feels more comfortable. Reduce glare, use comfortable indoor lighting, and keep a note of headache timing, jaw activity, eye changes, fever, and medicines taken. Arrange a clinical review if the symptom is new, keeps returning, or is accompanied by persistent jaw locking or difficulty opening the mouth.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe headache, fever with neck stiffness, confusion, fainting, weakness, a new vision change, severe eye pain, or repeated vomiting. Prompt assessment is also sensible when light sensitivity follows an injury or becomes progressively stronger. Do not drive if vision is impaired or the pain makes it unsafe.
Questions for your doctor
Could my jaw examination explain the facial pain, or should my eyes and headache pattern be checked? What symptoms would make this urgent? Which jaw-rest measures are suitable, and should I keep a diary of light exposure, clenching, and headaches?

Questions people ask
Can TMJ problems cause light sensitivity?
Jaw pain and muscle tension may accompany a headache with light sensitivity, but light sensitivity can have other causes and should be assessed when it is new or severe.
Should I stay in a dark room?
Reducing glare can help temporarily, but complete avoidance of ordinary light is not a substitute for finding the cause, especially if symptoms persist.
