What should you know about titanium allergy test?

Reactions attributed to titanium can involve skin near an implant, jewellery or another contact site, although symptoms may also have other causes. A clinician reviews timing, the material involved, previous reactions and the appearance of the skin. Patch testing may be considered for a delayed contact reaction; a blood test or other investigation may be discussed in selected situations. Testing a small surface exposure does not always reproduce a deeper response around an implant, so a result must be interpreted with the full clinical picture.

Do not remove an implant or stop a prescribed treatment without speaking with the responsible clinician. Bring a list of implants, dental materials, jewellery, occupational exposures and products used on the skin. Photograph a rash when it is active and record when it began. Ask whether another metal, adhesive, disinfectant or infection could explain the symptoms. If testing is planned, follow instructions about medicines that may affect skin responses.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or widespread hives after an exposure. Arrange prompt medical review for an implant-area rash with increasing pain, warmth, drainage, fever or reduced function, because these features can signal infection or another complication rather than allergy alone.

Ask which reaction is being investigated, whether patch testing is appropriate, what the limitations are, and which alternative materials or treatments could be considered if symptoms continue.
