Three-level cervical fusion: what to know

Fusion removes motion at the treated segments so the spine can become a stable unit. The surgeon may first remove a disc or bone that is crowding a nerve or the spinal cord, then place a PEEK Spinal Cage or another spacer between the vertebrae. A Plate and Screws may help maintain position. Three levels may be selected when changes affect several parts of the cervical spine, including problems associated with Cervical Spondylosis or Cervical Radiculopathy.

Fusion does not repair every source of neck or arm symptoms. Pain, tingling, balance changes, or weakness may improve at different speeds, and the result depends on the cause, nerve condition, general health, and healing.

Before treatment, discuss medicines, nicotine, other illnesses, home support, and the surgeon’s approach. Prepare a safe space for resting and keep essential items within easy reach. Follow instructions about wound care, collar use, lifting, driving, and work. Walking is usually increased in stages, while exercises are introduced when the treating team considers them suitable. Keep follow-up appointments so symptoms and healing can be reviewed.

Call the surgical team if pain is worsening rather than settling, the wound becomes red or draining, fever develops, or new arm weakness or coordination trouble appears. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or sudden severe weakness. Difficulty swallowing that prevents drinking needs prompt medical advice.
