Short answer

Medicines and hormonal contraception can sometimes reduce or pause periods, but the right option depends on your health, symptoms, and pregnancy plans.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What stopping a period can mean

A period may be delayed for a practical reason, or reduced because it is painful, heavy, or linked with a condition affecting the womb or pelvis. Hormonal methods can change the lining of the womb and the pattern of bleeding. Some people have light breakthrough bleeding while their body adjusts. Period suppression is different from treating the cause of severe pelvic pain; conditions such as adenomyosis, endometriosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease may need their own assessment.

Options to discuss

A clinician may discuss a combined pill or a hormonal coil, depending on your medical history and whether you want contraception. Do not use someone else’s tablets or alter a prescribed schedule without advice. Tell the clinician about migraine with aura, previous blood clots, liver disease, unexplained bleeding, medicines, and possible pregnancy. Keep a record of bleeding, cramps, flooding, missed activities, and any pelvic symptoms; this helps guide the choice.

When to seek care

Arrange medical assessment for bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, new severe pain, fever, unusual discharge, or symptoms that are worsening. Seek urgent help for very heavy bleeding with dizziness, fainting, breathlessness, or marked weakness, or for severe pelvic pain with possible pregnancy. Painful periods that repeatedly disrupt daily life deserve review even if a period-suppression method seems helpful.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which option fits your health history, what bleeding changes are expected, how quickly it may work, and what to do after a missed dose. Ask whether your symptoms suggest adenomyosis, endometriosis, ovarian endometrioma, pelvic inflammatory disease, or uterine fibroids, and when follow-up is needed.
