Telogen Effluvium Triggers

Short answer
Telogen effluvium can follow illness, major stress, hormonal change, nutritional strain, surgery, or a medication change, often with shedding noticed later.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Trigger types
- Illness, stress, hormonal change, nutrition, surgery, and medicines may matter.
- Timing clue
- Shedding can be noticed after the initiating event.
- Best preparation
- Bring a dated health and medication timeline.
What may shift the hair cycle
A high fever or significant infection, an operation, childbirth, rapid weight loss, restrictive eating, low protein intake, emotional shock, or a prolonged period of poor sleep may affect the hair cycle. Some medicines can also be followed by shedding. The trigger is not always obvious, and more than one factor may be present. Because hair responds with a delay, the event to discuss may have happened before the day you first noticed Hair Loss.
Build a useful timeline
List illnesses, fevers, procedures, major stressors, diet changes, menstrual or postpartum changes, and every new or stopped medicine. Add the date when washing or brushing began to feel different. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Regular meals, adequate protein, gentle handling, and avoiding tight styles support the scalp while the cause is reviewed. Hair Supplement Therapy should follow assessment rather than replace it; PRP For Hair Loss and Topical Minoxidil address selected patterns, not every trigger.
When shedding may need another explanation
Arrange care for sharply defined patches, loss of eyelashes or eyebrows, scalp redness, scale, tenderness, pustules, or broken hairs. Seek review when shedding is severe, keeps returning, or continues after a suspected trigger has resolved. A clinician can check for inflammatory scalp disease, patterned thinning, or a nutritional or hormonal contributor.
Questions to bring
Which event in my history is most relevant, and could there be more than one? Could my diet, periods, thyroid health, or medicines contribute? Do I need tests before taking supplements? What change in my scalp would require an earlier appointment?

Questions people ask
Can emotional stress trigger telogen effluvium?
A major or prolonged emotional strain may be followed by diffuse shedding, although physical, nutritional, hormonal, and medication factors can also contribute.
Should I stop a medicine that I suspect caused shedding?
No. Discuss the concern with the prescriber, who can weigh alternatives and the risks of changing treatment.
