Swollen elbow and gout: what to know

Short answer
Gout can make the elbow suddenly swollen, hot, and painful, but infection and injury can look similar.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical flare
- Sudden warmth, tenderness, and restricted elbow movement.
- Avoid
- Pressure, puncturing, and unreviewed leftover medicines.
What an elbow flare may mean
Gout develops when urate crystals irritate the lining of a joint or nearby tissues. The elbow may become tender, red, warm, and difficult to bend; a firm lump near the tip can reflect a crystal deposit in the bursa. Gout is a condition that can present with joint swelling, but a swollen elbow does not by itself establish the cause. Kidney problems, medicines, alcohol, dehydration, and other health factors may influence urate handling. A clinician may use the history, examination, blood tests, imaging, or fluid testing to distinguish gout from infection or another inflammatory problem.
What to do during symptoms
Rest the arm in a supported position and avoid leaning on the elbow. A wrapped cold pack may ease discomfort for short periods. Drink normally unless a clinician has given you fluid restrictions. Use only pain or gout medicine that is suitable for your medical history; some medicines need caution with kidney disease, ulcers, blood thinners, or pregnancy. Do not squeeze or puncture a lump. Record when the swelling began, what joints have been affected, and any recent medication changes.
When to seek care
Get same-day medical advice for a first sudden attack, a very hot or red joint, broken skin over the swelling, or pain that is rapidly worsening. Seek emergency help if fever, chills, confusion, severe weakness, or spreading redness occurs. Infection in a joint can damage tissue quickly and needs different treatment from gout. Review is also sensible when attacks recur, the elbow stays swollen between flares, or ankle, knee, or other joint symptoms develop.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how gout will be confirmed, whether fluid testing is needed, which medicines fit your kidney and stomach health, and how to reduce future crystal buildup.
