What should you know about Stryker total knee replacement?

Short answer

A Stryker total knee replacement uses a selected implant system to replace damaged knee surfaces and support movement after surgery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Stryker is the manufacturer; the exact components, fixation method, and surgical plan depend on your knee, activity needs, bone quality, and the surgeon's assessment. The operation is also called total knee arthroplasty. It is generally considered when knee damage causes ongoing pain or limits everyday activities despite non-surgical care.

What the replacement involves

During total knee replacement, the worn surfaces of the thighbone and shinbone are reshaped and covered with implant components. A smooth spacer sits between them, and the underside of the kneecap may also be treated. The new surfaces are designed to reduce painful contact and allow the knee to bend and straighten.

A system may combine metal components with highly cross-linked polyethylene, a durable medical plastic. Cobalt-chrome alloy, titanium, or another specified metal may be used in different components. Some implants are secured with bone cement, while others are designed for bone to grow onto their surface. Ask which combination is planned for you and why.

Computer navigation for surgery may help the team plan or check component alignment. It does not replace the surgeon's judgment and is not used in every operation.

How to prepare and recover

Before surgery, review medicines, allergies, dental concerns, medical conditions, and your home setup with the care team. Arrange help with meals, bathing, shopping, and transport while walking is limited. A physiotherapist can teach exercises and safe use of a walker or crutches before the operation.

After surgery, follow the wound, medicine, walking, and exercise instructions you were given. Gentle, regular physiotherapy helps restore bending, strength, balance, and confidence. Progress is individual: swelling and stiffness can fluctuate, so increase activity in the planned stages rather than forcing a painful movement. Keep follow-up appointments so the team can assess motion, the wound, and the implant.

Knee osteoarthritis is one condition that can lead to this operation. Knee pain and difficulty climbing stairs may improve as healing progresses, although the result depends on the condition of the knee and rehabilitation.

When to seek care

Contact your surgical team promptly if the incision becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful; fluid or pus appears; the wound opens; or you develop a fever or feel suddenly unwell. Report calf pain or swelling, new shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing blood urgently, because these symptoms can signal a serious complication.

Seek urgent assessment after a fall, a sudden inability to bear weight, a new deformity, or severe pain that does not settle with the plan provided. New numbness, a cold or unusually pale foot, or loss of movement also needs prompt medical attention.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which Stryker implant components are being considered, what metals and spacer material they contain, and whether bone cement will be used. Ask how the plan matches your bone quality, alignment, activity goals, and any metal sensitivity.

You can also ask what pain control and blood-clot prevention plan is expected, when you can drive or return to work, which exercises are suitable, and which symptoms should lead you to call the hospital. If computer navigation is proposed, ask what it adds to your individual surgical plan.

Questions people ask

Is a Stryker knee replacement different from total knee replacement?

Stryker is a manufacturer of knee implant systems. The operation remains total knee replacement, while the component design and materials vary according to the system and your surgeon's plan.

What materials may be used in the implant?

A knee system can include metal components and a polyethylene spacer. The metal may include cobalt-chrome alloy or titanium, and bone cement may be used for fixation. Your surgeon can identify the exact materials planned.

Will I need physiotherapy after surgery?

Most people are given a structured rehabilitation plan to rebuild knee movement and strength, practise safe walking, and return gradually to daily activities. Follow the schedule set by your clinical team.
