Stomach acid reflux: what to know

Reflux may cause a burning feeling behind the breastbone, an acid taste, regurgitation, burping or Abdominal Pain. It can be worse after a large meal, when bending or when lying down. Some people develop Cough, Chronic Cough, throat irritation or Difficulty Sleeping. A Hiatus Hernia can contribute, and Obesity may increase pressure on the stomach, but similar chest symptoms can have other causes.

Try smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and identify foods or drinks that reliably trigger symptoms. Raise the head end of the bed if night symptoms are frequent, and avoid tight clothing around the abdomen. A pharmacist or doctor can advise whether an antacid or acid-reducing treatment suits you and how long to use it.

Arrange a medical review if reflux is frequent, persistent, worsening or affecting sleep, or if swallowing becomes difficult. Seek urgent help for severe or unexplained Chest Tightness, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood or black stools, because these symptoms should not be assumed to be reflux.

Ask whether your symptoms fit reflux, whether another condition could explain them, and which lifestyle or medicine options are suitable. Explain when symptoms occur, what you have tried and whether food sticks when swallowing.
